Not all fabrics are good for machine stitching creative sewing projects.
For this type of project, you need resistant and non-stretch fabrics, in order to obtain a good shaping effect. So let’s see in detail which are the best fabrics for sewing by machine in a creative way.
Cotton Fabric
The most used fabric in creative sewing is cotton. They are found in different weights, thinner or thicker. The thin one lends itself to becoming a lining for creative projects such as bags or cases.
The height of the cotton is usually 150cm. Prints are diverse and varied. It is a truly versatile fabric that can be easily sewn with an 80 needle.
Gobelin Fabric
This is a textured fabric, where the designs are created by the interweaving of the threads. It is quite expensive as it is used for furniture. It is usually sold in panels.
It is very thick and does not need reinforcement. The implementation of the project is ensured. I recommend using a 90-needle.
American cotton fabric
They are fabrics used in the quilting or patchwork sector. These are kinds of cotton that have a very compact structure.
They have a fixed height of 110 cm. They are often sold in collections, proposed by foreign designers. They are excellent fabrics for creating creative combinations and accessories such as bags and purses.
Denim canvas fabric
Denim is one of the most versatile fabrics used in creative sewing. On the market, you can find both the blue and the black ones, but there are so many variations: shaded, with glitter, decorated.
I recommend not using stretch jeans and always using a 90 needle to sew it. Seam thicknesses can often be addressed with a compensator.
Canvas fabric
The canvas is a canvas that re-proposes the structure of a raw canvas, visible to the naked eye.
It lends itself very well to creative sewing projects because, thanks to the application of a thermo-adhesive fabric, the shape of the project is ensured. For sewing the canvas it is sufficient to mount an 80 needle.
Canvas or linen fabric
Hemp or linen canvases are used for the realization of Zakka-style projects. The use of this canvas allows you to create combinations with colored kinds of cotton and jeans.
The shaping of the project is ensured by the use of thermo-adhesive cloth which, if ironed on the back, greatly stabilizes the structure of the cloth.
Loneta fabric
The Loneta fabric is a very cheap polyester, sold at a width of 280 cm. It frays a lot during processing, so it is advisable to trim the edges of the fabric with a zigzag stitch.
The prints are digital and with washing, they tend to disappear, for this reason, we recommend the use of Loneta for the realization of projects that do not need to be washed often (for example kitchen furniture).
Home furnishing fabrics
Fabrics intended for home furnishings are excellent for creative sewing. Textures and materials can be different. Often, even the use of interlining is not necessary.
The heights of these fabrics can be different, depending on their type. Often these are heavy fabrics, which lend themselves very well to the creation of creative sewing projects. If they are heavy, it is best to fit a 90 needle into the machine.
Quilt fabric
A quilt is a type of fabric made from two layers of cotton and one layer of batting, all stitched together and quilted.
This fabric lends itself very well to being used to make bags or accessories for new mothers or layettes for babies. A 90-needle is enough.
Striped fabric
The fabric called Millerighe is a cotton that has the consistency of a sheet. It is so called because of its structure made up of many small parallel lines.
Of this fabric, there are fantasies for children and for this reason, it lends itself a lot to the realization of projects intended for newborn or baby kits.
